Hacker 25

List-o-Mania erupts at Hacker Group! We're celebrating the 25 years of our history with 25 weeks of fun, fact-filled, bizarre, local, international, heartbreaking, heartwarming and fascinating lists. Check back often to see what will make our next List of Lists.
Where were you in '86
We asked our staff where they were and we got some interesting data. We'll lay it out for you, and you can do the analysis yourself. By asking an open-ended question like this, we got two basic types of answers:
Geographical
  • 28% were already living in the great state of Washington. They knew a good thing when they had it.
  • 8% lived elsewhere in the Northwest U.S. (Oregon, Idaho, Montana and Utah) and made the pilgrimage to Seattle later.
  • 13% were living in California. Smart move, people.
  • 4% were living it up in Texas.
  • 4%, surprisingly, hung out in Wisconsin that year.
  • 9% spent time in 1986 in other Midwestern states, including Illinois, Michigan, Indiana, Ohio and Indiana. They must have heard that Seattle doesn't have high humidity, snow or monster mosquitoes.
  • Others could be found in Arizona, Colorado, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Mississippi, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Nevada, New York and Oklahoma.
  • Other nations were home to future Hackers — including: Rangiora, New Zealand; London, England; Hong Kong; South Korea; Melbourne, Australia; and — not to be forgotten — Redcliff, Alberta, Canada.
Existential (that is, answers we don't know how to categorize):
  • Not alive
  • I was not yet conceived
  • Was not born in 1986
  • In a blanky
  • I was probably napping
  • I was 7
  • In 1986, I was in Mrs. Minnie's 2nd grade classroom
  • In front of a TV
  • High School
  • Probably at the Iron Maiden concert

Though less specific in terms of location, we can see that a number of our coworkers are awfully young!

"The no-man's land between college and gainful employment." — Paul Ford

"Working in a gold mine in Nevada." — Lance Blanchard
